Coccidian and viral infections in cats

Feline viral infections can lead to immunosuppression that predispose cats to other infections, such as protozoan diseases. More than one hundred cats coming from shelter houses and veterinary clinics were tested for detection of protozoan (Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum) and viral infections (Feline immunodeficiency virus, Feline leukemia virus and Virus of feline panleukopenia) to analyse risk factors of co-infections for developing of clinical signs in naturally infected cats. Co-infection with protozoan diseases can lead to severe clinical signs and be even fatal in immunosuppressed cats. Results were statistically analysed to find risk factors of infections and occurrence of clinical signs. Cats with some infection showed clinical signs more often than cats without any infection. Clinical signs were noticed more often in cats with mixed infections than in cats with mono infections, and were noted as a more serious and acute in case of FIV and T. gondii co-infection. More details and statistical analysis to be seen inside!

Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Researchers have highlighted that domesticated cats in the United States kill far more animals than previously thought! Official statistics have recorded more than 1.4 to 3.7 billion birds and 6.9 20.7 billion small mammals which have been killed by cats each year. Domesticated cats which are treated as pets have proved to be very cuddling and adorable yet conservationists have highlighted that these creatures are destroying the environment more efficiently than humans. Reports from the United stated have referred to domesticated cats as the worst invasive species. Fortunately, conservationists have found a solution to this problem by joining forces with biologists. As a matter of fact, biologists have conducted research and surveys and have discovered that there are about 84 million owned cats which reside in the United States. On the other hand there are approximately 30 to 80 million un-owned cats, which include feral cats, barn cats, and cats who are not allowed inside...

Cats, cats, and more cats! Expressive or aloof, affectionate or enigmatic, cats have complicated characters that make them compelling artists' muses. Artful Cats explores the quirky and charming relationships of artists with their cats in 130 rarely seen photos, paintings, sketches, manuscripts, and letters from the Archives of American Art. Jasper Johns, Frank Stella, Louise Nevelson, Marcel Breuer, Yves Tanguy, Georgia O'Keeffe, Edward Weston, Robert Indiana, Judy Chicago, Berenice Abbott, and Romare Bearden show off their artful cats, which appear as companions, inspirations, instigators, and often regents of the home or studio. The images, culled from the archive's extensive holdings from the nineteenth century through today, celebrate our cultural heritage through our enduring fascination, love, and bemusement with our feline familiars. A foreword by Kate Haw, director of the Archives of American Art, describes how these archival treasures provide a window on unexpected and personal details of celebrated artists' lives and work.

Diabetes in Cats and Dogs

Diabetes mellitus strikes 1 in 400 cats and a similar number of dogs, though recent veterinary studies note that it is becoming more common lately in cats. Symptoms in dogs and cats are similar to those in humans. Generally, most diabetic dogs and about 5-20% of diabetic cats experience type-1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes, rather than the type-2 that's now becoming common in obese humans. The other 80-95% of diabetic cats experience type-2 diabetes. The condition is definitely treatable, and need not shorten the animal's life span or life quality. In type-2 cats, prompt effective treatment can even lead to diabetic remission, in which the cat no longer needs injected insulin. Untreated, the condition leads to blindness in dogs, increasingly weak legs in cats, and eventually malnutrition, ketoacidosis and/or dehydration, and death.

The cat has been living in close association with humans for at least 3500 years, the ancient Egyptians routinely used cats to keep mice and other rodents away from their grain. The history of domestic cat may stretch back even further, as 8,000 year-old bone of humans and cats were found buried together on the island of Cyprus. Cats are social, extroverted cats that love human companionship and like being part of whatever's going on. They often attach strongly to one person, demanding constant attention from that person. Currently, the cat is the world's most popular household pet. The domestic cat is the definitive host for Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) and the virus has a worldwide distribution. FeLV is a retroviruses that represent one of the most common and important infectious diseases of cats worldwide. It is responsible for more death among cats than any other infectious disease. This book illustrates the introduction, rapid diagnosis, prevalence, treatment, prevention and control of FeLV in cats.
