Epidemiology of multi-drug resistant staphyloco...

The human relationship with cats and dogs has been suggested to be of potential concern to public health because of the possible role of pets as reservoir of antibiotic resistant microorganisms. Pets are increasingly used to assist therapy in nursing homes and the interaction between cats, dogs and their owners in the household has become very close. Thus, public health would benefit by investigating this issue with a One Health approach. One Health is a conceptual thinking that promote interdisciplinary cooperation between human and animal health. Here I suggest the One Health interdisciplinary approach to be helpful towards the understanding of the role of pets in antibiotic resistance spreading, considering also the socio-emotional context of the human-pet relationship.

Cats in Question, a new book in Smithsonian's highly successful "In Question" series, offers authoritative and engaging answers to the thousands of questions about cats that Smithsonian scientists receive annually. All of the world's cats are here, from fearsome predators such as lions and tigers, to mysterious hunters such as leopards and jaguars, to cuddly pets such as domestic cats. More than 100 breathtaking photographs by acclaimed photographer Art Wolfe illustrate the questions on cat facts, cat evolution and diversity, and cats and humans.

Domesticated cats which are treated as pets have proved to be very cuddling and adorable yet conservationists have highlighted that these creatures are destroying the environment more efficiently than humans. Reports from the United stated have referred to domesticated cats as the worst invasive species. Fortunately, conservationists have found a solution to this problem by joining forces with biologists. As a matter of fact, biologists have conducted research and surveys and have discovered that there are about 84 million owned cats which reside in the United States. On the other hand there are approximately 30 to 80 million un-owned cats, which include feral cats, barn cats, and cats who are not allowed inside...
